About the 870 Visa
Sponsored Temporary Parent Visa (Subclass 870) allows Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to sponsor their parents for a temporary stay of 3 or 5 years. The maximum stay under this visa category is 10 years (two separate 5-year visas). This visa has no pathway to permanent residency.
Who can apply for the 870 Visa?
For applicants:
- You must be over 18 and be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent (or parent-in-law) of the approved sponsor.
- You must have a genuine intention to stay temporarily in Australia and provide proof of sufficient funds.
- You must maintain adequate health insurance for your intended stay.
- You must have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government.
- You must meet health and character requirements (and have never committed visa fraud).
For sponsors:
- You must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen who has resided in Australia for at least 4 years.
- You must be 18 years of age or older.
- The sponsored person must: be your (or your spouse’s/de facto partner’s) biological, adoptive, or step-parent.
- You must: have a taxable income of at least 83,454.80 AUD in the last financial year, with at least 50% of this income attributed to you if you combine income with an eligible partner or sibling.
- You must have complied with any previous sponsorships and be willing to meet sponsorship obligations.
- You must meet character requirements (no significant adverse information, no criminal record, no debts to the Commonwealth).
