About the Permanent Parent Visa

Permanent Parent Visas allow parents of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia. In some cases, you may first be granted a temporary visa, followed by a further application (and payment) for a permanent visa. All Parent Visa applications must be lodged on paper using the relevant form.

Frequently Asked Questions

All applicants for a Parent Visa must meet the balance of family test if:

  • At least half of your children and stepchildren are eligible children.
  • There are more eligible children in Australia than in any other single country.

(An eligible child is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident usually residing in Australia, or an eligible New Zealand citizen living in Australia.)

You can have only one parent visa application in process at a time. If you want to switch to a different parent visa, you must withdraw any existing application first.

Offshore Parent Visas
If you apply outside Australia, you can apply for:

  • Parent Visa (Subclass 103): A permanent visa with an approximate processing time of 31 years. You may later sponsor eligible family members and potentially apply for citizenship (if eligible).
  • Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173): A temporary visa with higher fees but faster processing than the Subclass 103, allowing you to stay in Australia for up to 2 years.

Onshore/Offshore Parent Visas
If you apply in or outside Australia, you can apply for:

  • Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143): A permanent visa with higher fees than the Subclass 103 but a shorter queue (currently at least 14 years). You need an assurance of support. If you hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173), you can transition to this visa with a reduced first instalment.

Onshore Parent Visas
If you apply in Australia (and meet the age requirement), you can apply for:

  • Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804): A permanent visa suitable for applicants 67 years or older, with an approximate processing time of up to 31 years.
  • Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 884): A temporary visa for applicants 67 years or older, with higher fees but faster processing.
  • Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 864): A permanent visa for applicants 67 years or older, with higher fees, an assurance of support, and faster processing than the Subclass 804. If you hold Subclass 884, you can transition to Subclass 864 with a reduced first instalment.

Assurance of support

Some Permanent Parent Visas require an assurance of support. This is a legal commitment by an individual or organization to provide financial support, so you do not rely on certain social security payments.

For the most up-to-date processing times, refer to the Department of Home Affairs website.

Demand for these visas far exceeds available places, so processing times can be lengthy. There is no exact timeframe, and many parent visas can take years or even decades. Refer to the Parent Visa Queue page on the Department of Home Affairs website.
