About the Child Visas
Child Visas allow children whose parents are Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia. Generally, children are sponsored by their biological or adoptive parents. These visas must be applied for on a paper form; online applications are not available.
What are the eligibility requirements for Child Visas?

The child must either be:
- Dependent on their parent (an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen) for Child Visas (Subclass 101 or Subclass 802),
- Adopted or in the process of being adopted for the Adoption Visa (Subclass 102),
- Dependent on a parent who holds a Dependent Child Visa (Subclass 445), Partner (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 309), or Partner Visa (Subclass 820) for the Dependent Child Visa (Subclass 445).
For Visa Applicants:
- You must have an approved sponsor. For Child Visas (Subclass 101 or Subclass 802), the sponsor is usually the child’s eligible parent or their parent’s spouse/de facto partner. For the Adoption Visa, the sponsor is the adoptive or prospective adoptive parent. For the Dependent Child Visa, the sponsor is the same person who sponsored or nominated the child’s parent’s permanent Partner Visa application.
- You must meet age requirements. For Child Visas, children can be under 18 years old, 18–25 and studying full-time, or over 18 with a disability. For the Adoption Visa, the child must be under 18 throughout the process. For the Dependent Child Visa, the child must be under 18 or over 18 and financially dependent on their parent.
- You must not have a partner (no marriage, de facto relationship, or engagement).
- You must meet health and character requirements.
- You must have repaid or made arrangements to repay any debt to the Australian Government.
- You must have consent to migrate if under 18 years old (written consent from all legal guardians; must also comply with home country laws).
