The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa, allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill nominated positions when they cannot find suitable local labor. The 482 Visa can provide a pathway to renewal and even possible permanent residency in Australia.
This visa is typically valid for up to four years, and there are three streams under which you may be eligible: The 482 visa offers three distinct streams to meet varying skill needs:

Core Skills Stream
- Occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List.
- Nominated annual salary must meet the current TSMIT (AUD 73,150).

Specialist Skills Stream
- For ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5, or 6.
- Nominated annual salary must be at least AUD 135,000.

Labour Agreement Stream
- For businesses operating under a Labour Agreement with the Australian Government.
- Specific occupations and visa terms are outlined in each agreement.
Who can apply for the 482 Visa?

- Are nominated by an approved sponsor.
- Have the necessary qualifications and at least one year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a closely related field.
- Obtain a valid skills assessment if required by your occupation and meet any registration/licensing requirements.

Sponsorship
- The employer must apply and be approved as a standard business sponsor or have a labour agreement in place.
- The business must be actively and lawfully operating, and if located in Australia, must demonstrate a commitment to employing local labor and non-discriminatory recruitment practices.
- Once approved, a standard business sponsorship is generally valid for five years. Sponsors may apply for accredited status for priority processing.
Nomination
- The nomination must specify the occupation, terms, and conditions of the role offered to the overseas worker.
- Depending on the chosen stream, the sponsor must ensure:
- Core Skills Stream: The occupation is on the relevant Core Skills Occupation List and meets the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) of currently AUD 73,150 per annum (as of July 1, 2024).
- Specialist Skills Stream: The occupation is listed under ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5, or 6, with a nominated salary of at least AUD 135,000 per annum.
- Labour Agreement Stream: The occupation must be specified within a valid Labour Agreement.
- The position must be genuine, full-time, and essential to business operations.
- Market salary rates must be paid to ensure overseas workers receive pay comparable to an Australian worker in the same role.
- If the occupation is not exempt, labour market testing must be conducted to show no suitable local workers are available.
- Sponsors must pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy.
Visa Application
- The applicant must provide evidence of work experience, qualifications, English proficiency, health and character.
- The applicant must have a relevant skills assessment if required and meet any required registration or licensing standards for the occupation.
- The visa application must be lodged with the Department of Home Affairs, accompanied by the required fees and documentation.

- 482 sponsorship application fee – $420

- 482 Visa application fee – Adult applicants – $3,115, Child Dependent – $780
- Subsequent Temporary Application Charge (STAC) – $700 per applicant depending on previous visa history
