Biosecurity Amendment Bill 2020  (Traveller Declarations and Other Measures)

The Australian Government recently passed Biosecurity Amendment Bill 2020. According to the new legislation, there be massive fines issued and visas potentially canceled for those who do not declare high-risk bio-security goods. Incoming passenger cards are legal documents and require the passenger to mark YES on the card to declare if they are carrying certain food, plant material, or animal products.

Key highlights of the latest changes to the Biosecurity Bill:

1. Fines up to $2,664 (12 penalty units) and visa cancellations for those who fail to declare high-risk biosecurity goods.
2. The power to cancel a visa is being extended to international students, temporary work, and visitor visa holders.
3. For more serious breaches of the law, Australian citizens or residents could face court action, with potential penalties ranging from $12,600 (civil matters) to $420,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 10 years (criminal prosecutions).
4. The new law will come into effect on January 1, 2021.
