The 2020 Australian Budget has an update to the partner visa applications. Know the latest requirements for partner visas.
- The Department of Home Affairs is planning to introduce an English language requirement for partner visa applicants by mid-2021. • The applicant as well as their sponsor will have to meet functional level English. One of the means of demonstrating functional English is by scoring at least 4.5 based on the four test components (speaking, reading, listening, and writing) of the IELTS, OR to have at least made reasonable efforts to learn English by attending around 500 hours of free English classes at the Adult Migrant English Program.
- Partner visas are processed in two stages and the new language requirement would not need to be met until someone was applying for permanency, usually after living in Australia for two years on a temporary partner visa.
- The Department of Home Affairs is also temporarily boosting the number of partner visas available this financial year under the existing migration cap of 160,000 places. This is expected to clear the backlog of around 100,000 partner visas.
- Priority to be given to applicants who are onshore applicants and applicants based in regional areas.
